Which is More Effective – Group Studying or a Personalized Approach?

As students head back to school, most of them have to decide whether they want to join a study group or learn on their own. There are many advantages and disadvantages to both methods, but which approach helps students learn the most? Which one gives them the best grades? Check out this article to see what the research says about group studying versus personalized learning.

The difference between group studying versus personalized approach

In most studies, it has been found that although studying in groups can be effective, a personalized study session produces better results. To find out why, you have to understand how both work. When you are with other people, the tendency is for each person to take turns answering questions and talking about what they know. The benefit of this type of interaction is that all members of the group learn from one another, but there are downsides as well. For example, each person who speaks makes more mistakes than when they study alone because they don't receive instant feedback from the teacher like they would if they were having a personalized lesson with an instructor. Plus, there's no guarantee that everyone will share their knowledge equally; this could lead some students to feel ignored or frustrated by not being able to answer questions correctly as often as others in the group.

How to create your own personalized study guide

First and foremost, you must find out what your assignments are! This sounds obvious, but it’s often easier said than done. If you are taking an online class or course, through an MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) provider such as Coursera, Udacity, edX or Khan Academy, that information will be available on your instructor’s class page. Alternatively, many schools now have a course portal on their website where you can find everything you need to succeed in your courses.

How to improve your memory while preparing for exams

How many times have you sat down to study and within an hour, maybe even just 20 minutes, thought to yourself What was I doing again? Chances are it was due to a lack of concentration. A great way to ensure that you don’t lose focus while studying is by learning how to improve your memory. There are several different ways you can do so; read on for some tips and tricks!
